Cultural Taboos

Sometimes other cultural traditions contribute to a diminishing supply of water. Some indigenous people have water rituals that consume excessive amounts of water. For example, in Alaska, the Yupiks have a death ceremony that involves a large amount of water. In the ritual, they flood the dead with their belongings into one basin. Then they drain the water and burn their remnants. The ashes and polluted water are poured back into a water source, contributing to water pollution.
